Kyler came to me on Friday night, May 29th and told me that his left thumb kind of hurt. It didn't appear to me to have any cuts or abrasions on it and it looked quite normal. I had him clean it up well, we put a band-aid on it, I gave him some IBuprofen, and I sent him to bed. He woke me up at 3 am and he was crying and telling me that his thumb really hurt. We took the band-aid off and the skin next to his thumbnail looked "ashen". I took him to the ER and by the time the doctor looked his finger over, the ashen area had filled with fluid and it looked like a water blister. The doctor asked Kyler if he had been playing too many video games. We replied "no". The doctor stated that all he could see was clear fluid, so he prescribed some Keflex and pain meds. and sent us home. Kyler came to me at 8:30 later that morning and told me that the blister was getting larger. I decided to call our Pediatrician's office to have another doctor look it over. We weren't able to get an appointment until 1:40 that afternoon. As we were sitting in the reception area waiting to be seen by the doctor, Kyler looked down at his arm and said, "Mom, there's red streaks on my arm". This was not good and as soon as the doctor saw him, she admitted him to Providence hospital. They put him on IV antibiotics and we spent two days in the hospital. Thankfully, the medication worked rapidly and he was able to go home earlier than they had anticipated. We still don't know how if got infected, but the lab tests showed that the infection was a "staph & strep" infection. As you can see from the pictures, Kyler mostly enjoyed himself in the hospital. He had very nice nurses, got to play video games & watch movies, and get what he called "room service". Makayla was a bit jealous of him!
