Trip to Whittier (Part I)

On June 13th, Steve's uncle Dave took the family out on Prince William Sound with a friend of his who owns a 36 foot catamaran. They enjoyed a beautiful day out on the water. It got exciting, however, when they were ready to head back to Whittier and were about 2 hours away. The captain noticed that he was having some engine problems and the bilge pump wasn't working properly. He then mentioned that he had run the boat aground a few days early, but he hadn't thought that he had caused any damage. Little did he know that there was a large hole in his boat. Fortunately they were close to enough to make it to shore and call for help. Another boat came and took some of the adults and all of the kids back to Whittier. Steve, Dave, Tom, and the captain stayed on the boat trying to do some troubleshooting. Two Coast Guard volunteer boats showed up to help. The guys were finally able to override the bilge pump switch and they made it back to shore with the two Coast Guard boats escorting them. They even had a Coast Guard helicopter show up and hover over them for 20 - 30 minutes. Steve said it was just like we see on tv! What an adventure.
This first group of pictures was taken by Tom.
